Porte to race Vuelta after recovering from Tour crash

20 août 2018 12:58

Richie Porte has recovered from the fractured collarbone he sustained at the Tour de France and will ride in the Vuelta a Espana, it has been confirmed.

For the second year in succession, Porte crashed out on stage nine of the Tour, suffering injuries which left his Vuelta participation in doubt.

Due to leave for Trek-Segafredo in 2019, Porte's final Grand Tour with BMC Racing will be the Vuelta, which begins on Saturday.

The Australian has only once before competed in the race, finishing 68th in 2012.

"Of course, I would like to do well in my last Grand Tour for BMC Racing Team, but you never know where your form is when you haven't had an ideal run into a race," said the 33-year-old.

"After crashing out of the Tour de France, I had to have some time off and it took me a while to get back to work due to my injuries. I have put in some good training since then, but I won't be lining up in the shape I was in before the Tour de France.

"At first, I think I will definitely be taking the race day-by-day. The last week is pretty hard so you don't know what could happen there, but we have a great team lining up with lots of good options.

"There's definitely also a carrot dangling in front of me at the Vuelta with the UCI World Championships being a climber's course, so it will be good preparation for that."

It was also announced on Monday that Movistar's Mikel Landa would not take part in the Vuelta, following injuries sustained at the Tour de France and the Clasica de San Sebastian.
