Bills trade up to take Allen gamble

27 avril 2018 03:16

The Buffalo Bills made the biggest gamble of the 2018 NFL Draft by trading up to select Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen.

Buffalo, having dealt former starter Tyrod Taylor to the Cleveland Browns in March, struck a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to move up to number seven to select Allen.

As well as the 12th pick, the Bills sent two second-rounders to Tampa Bay to take a player seen as a significant project at the most important position in the game.

Allen is blessed with magnificent physical ability and possesses the best arm strength of any quarterback in the draft.

However, he has significantly struggled with his footwork and accuracy, completing just over 56 per cent of his passes for Wyoming against less than elite competition in the Mountain West Conference.

The Bills have former Cincinnati Bengals backup A.J. McCarron under contract, and he may be able to shoulder the burden of the starting job initially, but Buffalo will need to see significant improvements from Allen down the line for their decision to be validated.
