Kiwis great Mannering retires from internationals

New Zealand great Simon Mannering announced his retirement from international rugby league.

Mannering, 31, finished his international career as one of the most capped Kiwis in history, with his 45 appearances fewer than only Ruben Wiki (55), Gary Freeman (46) and Stacey Jones (46).

The New Zealand Warriors forward said it was time for New Zealand – who face England in a Test in the United States on June 23 – to look to the future.

"I've had this on my mind for a while," Mannering said.

"The idea of taking a Test to the United States is really exciting for the game but I think it's a good time for younger players to be given every opportunity.

"I was honoured to wear the Kiwi jersey every time and it's been a huge privilege having the chance to play alongside so many outstanding players. It was also a special honour to captain my country."

New Zealand coach Michael Maguire hopes 2008 Rugby League World Cup winner Mannering can play a role with the Kiwis in the future.

Wests Tigers duo Ben Matulino (23 Tests) and Russell Packer (7) also retired from New Zealand duty.
