Long-serving Wilkin to leave St Helens

9 août 2018 18:54

Jon Wilkin will leave St Helens at the end of the season after 16 years with the Super League leaders.

The former England forward has made almost 400 appearances for Saints since making the move from Hull KR in 2002.

Wilkin has opted to move on at the age of 34, but refused to be drawn on his next move.

"I will not be playing for St Helens next season." he said on the Whippets & Flat Caps podcast.

"Do I feel sad? Sad is the wrong word. It's been 16 years of my life. I could have left on four or five different occasions, I could have earned more money, for sure.

"Rugby has not been about money for me. I had the opportunity to leave on a number of occasions, but I never did because I have genuinely believed in what we are doing, even when it was horrible and things were tough and you were getting heavily criticised.

"I wanted to be there to see it through, I didn't want to just walk away. I love the club, it's given me everything in my life.

"I'm excited to do something else. Is it good or bad that I'm at St Helens next year? It's neither."

Saints have been the standout team in this year's Super League and ended the regular season with a 10-point lead at the top of the table.

Asked about his next employers, Wilkin added: "That's not for me to say. There's options."
