All teams have the right to participate in the competition.

81 teams enter the competition:

- all 12 Úrvalsdeild teams;

- all 12 1. Deild teams;

- all 12 2. Deild teams;

- all 10 3. Deild teams;

- all 31 4. Deild teams;

- 4 lower level teams.



The 12 1. Deild teams enter the competition at the 2nd Round.

The 12 Úrvalsdeild teams enter the competition at the 16th Finals.





Knockout stage:

1st Round:

55 teams, 54 of them are drawn into 27 pairs with the remaining 1 team receiving a bye into the 2nd Round.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

Hosting is determined by the draw.



2nd Round:

28 teams from the 1st Round and the 12 teams that enter the competition at this stage are drawn into 20 pairs.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

Hosting is determined by the draw.



16th Finals:

20 teams from the 2nd Round and the 12 teams that enter the competition at this stage are drawn into 16 pairs.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

Hosting is determined by the draw.



8th Finals:

16 teams are drawn into 8 pairs.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

Hosting is determined by the draw.



Quarter-finals:

8 teams are drawn into 4 pairs.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

Hosting is determined by the draw.



Semi-finals:

4 teams are drawn into 2 pairs.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

Hosting is determined by the draw.



Final:

The two Semi-finals winners meet each other with the winner becoming Cup winner.

Winner is decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

The match is played at a neutral venue.



Qualification for UEFA competitions:

winner: UEFA Europa League

* - if the Cup winner qualifies for the UEFA Champions League, then no team from the Cup qualifies. The best placed 2016 Úrvalsdeild team, not otherwise qualified for the UEFA Europa League, earns the spot instead.
